Tyrone Area gets creative with literacy events
Tyrone Area Elementary School is using creativity to encourage students’ literacy skills. In February, the school held a five-week “Stuck on Reading” challenge during which the students recorded the number of minutes they read. In exchange for reading, they were rewarded with inches of colorful duct tape, which they used to “stick” the dean of students to the wall! The students read for a total of 80,000 minutes. The schools also celebrated Read Across America Week by inviting parents and community members to read to the students in the classroom. In March, the school’s School-Wide Title 1 Program and parent teacher organization offered a “Bingo for Books” family activity in the evening. Students and their families enjoyed light refreshments, several rounds of Bingo, and students in pre-K through grade 4 received books and other prizes.
