Mrs. Kocher leads students in a yoga activity during this year’s summer program.

During this year’s SHINE (Students and Homes in Education) summer program, Mrs. Jodi Kocher, school counselor at Towamensing Elementary School, has been instructing students in yoga and mindfulness activities. Yoga has many mental and physical health benefits, and the students really like it. Yoga helps to improve our students’ flexibility, balance, and strength. Yoga also teaches students skills such as following directions and focusing on the task at hand. Mindfulness exercises also encourage the students to be focused on the present moment, and they promote the concept of calmness. These mindfulness activities are a wonderful tool to manage stress and anxiety, as is yoga.
