Third graders at Pittsburgh Carmalt participated in Kindness in Chalk 2020, a community service project using chalk to combat bullying with kindness. Led by teacher Joanne Depoutiloff, students were encouraged to talk to their parents about a location in their community to write a positive message. The activity challenged students to:

• Choose a kind word, phrase, or picture;
• Practice their artwork to ensure words are spelled correctly;
• Apply their design at the location; and
• Take a picture of the completed artwork.

The day before Thanksgiving, Zya, a third grader at Pittsburgh Carmalt, visited Pittsburgh Mifflin to participate in Kindness in Chalk 2020. With just a few pieces of chalk and a smile under her mask, Zya spread holiday cheer, joy, and kindness in her community. Families were encouraged to use all safety measures and CDC-recommended guidelines for outdoor events to participate in Kindness in Chalk 2020.
