NJROTC cadets practice service learning

The West York Area School District’s (WYASD) NJROTC Cadets, under the leadership of Master Gunnery Sergeant “Master Guns” Ronald Allender, USMC Ret., recently spent two days volunteering to spruce up the grounds of Slagle Park in West York by painting, planting flowers, and mulching. Community members and their children appreciate the cadets’ hard work to give the park a fresh look!

Prior to this weekend of service, the cadets completed their first visit to Arlington National Cemetery and the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC. Since the inception of the NJROTC Program at West York in the 2021-22 school year, the cadets have represented the district throughout the community through numerous volunteer and ceremonial duties.

West York’s NJROTC program, comprised of 28 cadets in grades 9-12, instills in young men and women the qualities of self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills necessary to face the challenges of life, not only while in high school but throughout post-high school life regardless of the path they choose.

The program exemplifies WYASD’s Mission and Vision of creating opportunities for our students to thrive and developing world-class citizens. WYASD’s ultimate goal is to equip graduates for opportunities to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive society while also empowering them to lead with integrity, empathy and respect for others.
