Local radio DJs read to students

Mike and Steph, DJs at B104 radio station, read to students in Ms. Hummer’s classroom at Towamensing Elementary School.

When Ms. Tammy Hoffman, speech therapist at Towamensing Elementary School, was listening to B104 radio station one day, she had a great idea! She contacted the radio station to see if Mike and Steph, the morning DJs, could come to Towamensing Elementary School and read to students. She was thrilled when they accepted her invitation.

When Mike and Steph visited, they read in Ms. Ashley Hummer’s classroom. They each read a story to the students, and then they read one together doing a variety of voices and sound effects. They brought balls, magnets and bookmarks for each of the students. It just so happened that one of the students was celebrating his birthday that day and Mike and Steph had announced it on the air that morning. Mike and Steph even stayed and enjoyed a birthday treat with the class.

These classroom visits are part of a large initiative called Lehigh Valley Reads, which is a collective impact campaign that supports, connects and mobilizes the community to ensure that all students in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas read on grade level by the end of third grade. Lehigh Valley Reads is powered by the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley and PBS39.
