A holistic approach to teaching Black history and culture

Carlisle Area School District’s approach to education on Black history and culture is an integrative one that spans the whole K-12 experience, according to an article in the Carlisle Sentinel. Although the subjects are taught during specific units of study, topics of discussion and learning are spread throughout the curriculum in a more holistic approach, said Michael Gogoj, district director of curriculum and instruction. In addition to learning about Black history and perspective on a national level, students are also exposed to local Black and Native American history and influence, including the Carlisle Indian School. The district takes state curriculum standards further by encouraging students to think critically — analyze events, look for patterns and make an effort to see history through another’s eyes, said Gogoj.
