The Saint Marys Area High School has a Certified Nursing Assistant program for seniors in the health related technology curriculum. Twice a year, the CNA students advertise, organize and run a blood drive at the school. They post fliers within the school and encourage classmates and staff to donate blood.
On the day of the blood drive, they assist the Community Blood Bank to unload and set up their equipment and supplies. Once the drive starts at 8:30 a.m., the students log in the donors, supply them with the appropriate registration forms, monitor their status while donating, ensure that they eat and drink after donating and then they log them out once the donors are ready to return to their classes.
At the end of the day, around 2:30 p.m., the students help the Community Blood Bank clean and pack up all of their equipment and supplies. The blood drive is a wonderful project for these students who all intend to further their education in one of the many health careers that are available and in such demand in today’s world!
