An Upper Merion Area High School student focuses on both physical and mental health in their PE assignment by incorporating an act of kindness through shoveling their neighbor’s driveway.

Students in Upper Merion Area High School had a unique assignment for their physical education classes on a snow day — one that incorporated physical and mental health. They were asked to shovel a neighbor’s driveway! Helping others has been shown to increase self-efficacy, mental well-being and an overall positive sense-of-self. Students took advantage of the weather by getting their physical exercise shoveling snow. The bigger reward was the mental health piece, helping a neighbor by shoveling their sidewalk and driveway. A simple act of kindness can have both physical and mental benefits!
